Genetically Modified Organisms
Genetically modified organisms commonly include soy, maize, rapeseed, and cotton, though cotton is not used as food. Within the European Union, all food products containing GMOs must be labelled according to Decision 1139/98/EC, and Directive 1829/2003 sets a 0.9% threshold for mandatory labelling in both food and feed.
Qualitative GMO detection is required where national or regional regulations enforce zero tolerance for non-approved GMO events. These tests typically detect down to around 0.01%, depending on the matrix. Regulation EC 619/2011 allows a technical threshold of 0.1% for certain non-approved GMO events in animal feed, supporting the management of contamination risks in imported maize and soy.
For approved GMO events, quantitative analysis determines whether products exceed defined thresholds such as the EU’s 0.9% limit. Contamination below this level, when technically unavoidable or accidental, does not require declaration. Quantification involves measuring both a GMO-specific gene and a plant-specific gene and calculating the proportion of GMO content using a calibration curve from a DNA standard.

GMO screening methods detect plant-extrinsic gene sequences introduced during genetic modification and provide an efficient way to determine whether GMOs are present at all. Gene targets may be selected for plant identification, general screening, event identification, or quantification, and can be combined modularly or used individually. DNA extraction efficiency can also be verified with the PLANT Plus Kit (S2049).
The SureFood® system offers a flexible, modular approach to amplification and detection, allowing users to configure assays to their needs. All modules are compatible with each other, and the system is available both as a product range and as a service.
