Tree nut allergies are among the most serious and widespread food allergies, affecting around one percent of the population. Even trace amounts can trigger severe reactions, making accurate detection and labelling essential to protect consumers and maintain trust in allergen-free claims.
Tree nuts, including almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, pecans, and others, must be clearly declared on product packaging under regulations such as EU Directive 2007/68/EC. However, because nuts are commonly used in confectionery, bakery, and snack production, cross-contamination remains a major risk in shared facilities. Reliable allergen testing is therefore crucial to ensure that “nut-free” truly means free from tree nut residues.
