Lupin
Lupin, a legume related to peanuts, soy, and peas, has become a widely used ingredient in food and feed due to its high protein content and versatile functionality. Sweet lupin varieties, such as L. albus, L. luteus, L. angustifolius, and L. mutabilis, are commonly incorporated into snacks, pasta, bread, cookies, and vegetarian meals, providing a natural protein source, water-binding properties, and even serving as an egg or flour replacement. However, lupin is also a recognised food allergen, with IgE-mediated reactions reported since 2000, including cross-reactivity in individuals with peanut allergies.
To protect consumer health, EU legislation (Directive 2007/68/EC and Regulation 1169/2011) requires lupin to be declared on all food labels. Accurate detection of lupin, including potential contamination in processed foods, is therefore critical for manufacturers.
R-Biopharm Australia offers advanced testing solutions to support reliable lupin allergen monitoring. Our real-time PCR and other sensitive assays enable accurate identification and quantification of lupin in raw ingredients, processed products, and final goods. These tests help manufacturers comply with regulatory requirements, prevent cross-contamination, maintain product integrity, and safeguard consumers from severe allergic reactions.
By implementing robust lupin allergen detection protocols, food producers can ensure safety, uphold labelling standards, and build consumer trust, while supporting a proactive approach to allergen management and overall food quality.
